Another wonderful week in the Victory Garden!!!
Wednesday afternoon Sept. 26 Patree Ruggieri, Leah Mire and her son Anthony, Mary Aaron and I picked 65 lbs of turnip greens, 2 lbs jalapeno peppers, 3 lbs egg plants, 9 lbs mustard greens, and 19 lbs sweet taters. I took half the greens and green maters (from Monday) to Mrs Goodman and Mrs Ferguson on Harris CV and the most of the rest of this weeks harvest to the Collierville Food Pantry. I only took half the sweet taters since the Food Pantry can only use so much at one time - will take rest next Thursday. We also watered plots 3 and 6 where the new seeds are. Anthony worked real hard and did an amazingly good job. He's a natural! We want him to come back soon!
We also cleaned out some of the pea and sweet tater vines from plot 1. Finishing digging the sweet taters, removing the last mater vines, and cleaning out plot 1 are our objectives for Monday.
Connie took big bunch of zinnias to Page Robbins on Tuesday. Town is supposed to clean out and till both beds for us to plant kale for the winter. Needs done ASAP.
3,671 + 65 + 2 + 3 + 9 + 19 = 3,769 year to date lbs!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
We will be back on normal schedule next week which is 430-600pm both Monday and Wednesday afternoons. There is plenty of work needs done if some of you want to pick another day/time and me meet you there.
Our finances: I doubled counted one check for $100 (it was sent to the MG office who counted it also) so our total is: $689.39 - 151.59 expenses for supplies I filed for Sept. 26 = balance $537.80. Most of the spending we have left this year is for fertilizer and landscape fabric for the garlic. Sure would be nice to be able to afford turning plot 1 into all raised beds like plot 4. Cost about $700 for plot 4. Have to factor in filling the beds with good soil.
Aint God good!!!

Another wonderful week in the Victory Garden!!!
Monday morning 07early Patree Ruggieri, Leah Mire, Mary Aaron, Selby Horton, Twila and I picked 18 lbs of green maters and dug 108 lbs of sweet taters and completely cleaned out plot 5 ready to plant more greens to be harvested in time to plant garlic end of November. We weeded plot 3 and interplanted onions in plot 3 with the cabbages which were already interplanted with Siberian kale. We also hilled up and planted all of plot 6 in turnip greens. And took all debris to the compost pile and cleaned the mater vines off the cages. WOW! These ladies did a lot of hard work!!!!!! I picked up a pickup load of bags of grass clippings from around town.
Monday afternoon Marti Sue Cline and Deborah Woody and a great group of hardworking Girl Scouts got a lot done too. They used the grass clippings to mulch plots 3 and 6 and dug most of the rest of the sweet taters (45 lbs) and picked 42 lbs of green maters. WOW!!!!! What a blessing they are!!!!
We will pick greens 430-6pm Wednesday and need a lot of help. They and the green maters and sweet taters will be taken to the Collierville Food Pantry Thursday morning. Please RSVP me by email to let me know who is coming!
3,458 + 108 + 18 + 45 + 42 = 3,671 year to date lbs!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another wonderful week in the Victory Garden!!!
Wednesday Patree Ruggieri, Leah Mire, Chris Norris, Evie Talada, and I picked a sack of jalapeno peppers, eleven bushels of mustard greens, and 2 bushels of turnip greens. Evie took the peppers and mustard greens to the Memphis Food Bank (102 lbs) and Patree took the turnip greens to the Collierville Food Pantry (20 lbs). Leah hoed the weeds out of plot 3 where the cabbages are.
Note the before and after mustard green pix showing how we pinch off the leaves. One row has been picked three weeks running now and has completely grown back each week. We pull up turnips to thin them and remove the roots.
3,336 + 122 = 3,458 year to date lbs!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lord willing, I will finish cleaning out plot 6 and plant it in turnip greens today.
We need to mow plots 1 and 5 and dig the sweet taters ASAP, as well as grabbing bags of grass clipping from around town to mulch the middles of plots 3 and 6.
Dave Fitzgerald will lead the garlic planting in plot 5 soon. He has the seed garlic.
Jimmy is leading a tour Saturday afternoon for a group from Tupelo MS.
The town will be cleaning out and remaking the zinnia beds after this week. I will be planting kale for the winter in them.
Next work day is 7-10am Monday morning to finish what I don't get done today, and we will pick greens again 430-6pm next Wednesday.
Aint God good!!!

Status and Next work Day Monday <<=======
Monday
Sep 10, Patree and I picked 11 lbs of maters and peppers and greens which I
took to 204 South St. We cleaned out most of plot 6 until we were ferociously attacked by
far aints (fire ants) and forced into a strategic withdrawal. I bought killer
spray and Roundup and have applied both judiciously and with great vigor and
determination!
Thursday
Sep 13, Jan, Patree, In Sung, and I picked 35 lbs of ig beautiful peppers, egg
plants, turnip greens and mustard greens, which Patree took to the Food Pantry.
3,290 lbs YTD + 11 + 35 = 3,336 lbs YTD!!!!!!!!
3,290 lbs YTD + 11 + 35 = 3,336 lbs YTD!!!!!!!!
Connie took zinnias to the fire stations and police station
on 9/11, a wonderful gesture. Laura continues taking zinnias to Baptist Trinity
Hospice. The town will reclaim the zinnia beds on Oct 1, so feel free to cut and use them for some good cause
or situation.
Note
from the Twentieth Century Club:
The flowers
today were beautiful and we used them on each table. Afterwards, shared with
teachers (hoping they'll return our vases!)
We had another
generous $100 donation this past week bringing our fund balance to $789.39. I
have spent about $100 and need to turn those receipts in.
Also, Jan Dickey donated a large bag of many kinds of seeds.
I especially love the exotic varieties of kale.
Monday
430-6pm we need a LARGE TURNOUT to:
1.
Finish cleaning out plot 6.
2. Plant turnip greens seeds in plot 6.
3. Plant kale seeds in various nooks and crannies.
4. Pick several bushels of turnip greens and mustard greens for
Evie to take to the Memphis Food Bank.
Aint God good and Aint we having a
good time and receiving a wonderful blessing!

Victory Garden status and work dates announcements 9/4/12
I dropped by the garden Sep 1, 2012 Satiddy morning and yestiddy (Monday) morning and picked a total of 12 pounds maters and lopes, which I took to Mrs Julia Ferguson on Harris CV to share with her neighbors.
3,278 lbs YTD + 12 = 3,290 lbs YTD!!!!!!!!
Two upcoming work opportunities for fun and fellowship, Lord willing and depending on the weather:
Thursday morning 8-9am pick mustard greens and a few maters and peppers. Mustard leaves need to be pinched or pruned off leaving the plants to grow so more.
Saturday morning 10am-noon. Clean out the cantaloupe patch (plot 6) and plant more turnip greens and maybe some more cabbages. Remove the unproductive mater vines and cages.
Aint God good!
