Victory Garden Thursday Sep 12 2013, Next work days Satiddy and Monday 730am

We could not have picked a more beautiful day to work in the Victory Garden.

Whit, Patree and I had a good day. We picked and took to the Food Pantry 199 lbs of fresh produce, 167 lbs of which were watermelons from Selby's and Jan's patch (plot 6). There are several more large watermelons almost but not quite ripe.

We picked an aig plant, watermelons, a few pole beans, maters, bell peppers, basil, turnip greens, mustard greens, and jalapenyo peppers.

We had a nice rain yesterday, but the new cabbige sets and seeds and sprouts need to stay damp so they need a light watering most days.

Whit prepared plot 3 for planting this Satiddy morning.

We are trying something I learned from my friend Vernon this week. Carrots are difficult to sprout, so we followed his lead and covered our carrot seed beds with damp brown paper. They will need to be checked daily and the paper removed when they sprout.

THIS SATURDAY MORNING, Lord willing, we will continue planting the fall garden:

1. Clean out plot 6 and harvest any watermelons which are reddy.
2. Prepare plot 3 bed and plant kale, onions, and rutabagas or collards.
3. Clean out back(west) end of the two front beds and plant something - maybe carrots. Leave the two mater vines on they east ends which are still producing.
4. Continue gathering bags of grass clippings and mulch all bare ground.
6. Watch for insect damage and remedy as needed.
7. Remove the weeds and pea vines to the dumpster.

Harvest total 2013 to date:
  1,621 YTD + 199 lbs = 1,820 lbs new YTD.
