August 10-15, 2014 CVG Work Progress and Upcoming Work Opportunities

This week's 180 lbs of harvest donations:
to Ms. Julia and the ladies of Harris Cove = 55 lbs;
to The Salvation Army Center of Hope in Memphis = 96 lbs;
to the Girl Scout visitors and other young Volunteers = 9 lbs;
to the Collierville Food Pantry =  20 lbs
Total YTD harvest donation = 1,541 lbs

Next Organized Work Opportunities:

Saturday 8:30 am - 10:30 am -- compost area work, garden weeding and maintenance, prep for Fall planting
Monday 8 am - 10:30 am -- continue compost area work, garden weeding, prep for Fall planting, harvest zinnias for the Collierville Burch Library, harvest as necessary
Tuesday 5:30 pm - 7 pm --Girl Scout visit for zinnia and vegetable harvesting
Thursday 8:00 am - 10:30 am -- Harvest and deliver to Collierville Food Pantry, any necessary garden maintenance, host visitors from MAMG and UT

Work Progress:

Over the last weekend Stephanie was able to harvest many pounds of tomatoes and okra-- the tomatoes have officially, officially arrived-- so that on Tuesday she delivered 55 lbs of produce to Ms. Julia. Also on Tuesday: Jan and Stephanie discussed plans for an overhead irrigation system; BT was sprayed on the pumpkin and honeydew vines as well as the corn silks; and zinnias were harvested and delivered to the Collierville Burch Library.

On Wednesday, Carl mowed around the garden and the Girl Scout visitors, aided by Twila, Jan, Amy, Judy, Carolyn, Lauryce, and Stephanie, harvested zinnias for Paige Robbins and an additional 84 lbs of produce for The Salvation Army Center of Hope.

Busy Harvesters:
On Thursday Twila and Stephanie harvested another 20 lbs and delivered to the Collierville Food Pantry. They also started pulling pea vines out of the south cinder block area and weeds in the walkways as well as watered the garden.
On Friday, Carl, Cason, Twila, and Stephanie continued pulling tired pea vines and healthy weeds from the cinder block area and started moving available compost into the garden beds.... and fighting fire ants. Carl also harvested some zinnias from Peterson Lake and delivered them to the Morton Museum and the Bible Museum.

Much progress was made cleaning out the south cinder block beds and adding fresh compost today:
