CVG 2015 Jan 1 - 17 Progress and Upcoming Opportunities

Upcoming Week's CVG Organized Work Opportunities:

***Please update your annual liability release form for the Church and give it to me/leave it in the mailbox the next time you work at the garden***:

Monday Jan 19:  8:30 am - 10:30 am -- Garden clean-up, weeding, moving available compost, maybe set up hay bale/window cold frame in plot 6 or one of the cinderblock beds

Thursday Jan 22: 8:30 am - 10:30 am -- Possible small harvest for Collierville Food Pantry, definite weeding and moving available compost

* Looking for any hotel sized toiletries, toothbrushes, kid's jackets and socks, new kid's underwear (all kid sizes, gender). We'll send on anything we receive with our produce donation to the Salvation Army on an ongoing basis.... So clear your shelves/drawers/closets!

Wish List for the Garden/Opportunities easily done on your own time:


*  Trailer (with a few strong backs and shovels) to pick up a few loads of beautiful compost that is available to us FOR FREE from the Town of Collierville
*  Yard bags of pine needles for the cinderblock walkways and mulching garlic
*  Pick up Starbucks (on Poplar) coffee grounds a couple of times per week (mid morning after breakfast rush or early afternoon after lunch rush) for composting
*  Old bird feeders
*  Meal worms for bluebirds

Garden Maintenance To Do List:

* Figure out how to shred the huge pile of oak leaves to speed up the composting process....
* Weed in cinderblock beds and wooden raised beds, plot 3 and plot 6, walkways.
* Spread sulphur to adjust soil pH
* Spray dormant oil in empty raised beds
* Re-secure black plastic coverings
* Pick up carpet coverings in between wooden raised beds (and spread a few haybales?)

Work Progress:

On Thursday Jan 1, Stephanie and her mother Sandra pulled frostcovers off plot 1 and 4 mustard beds, added coffee grounds from The Donutt Hut (delivered by Sophia) to the barrel composters, added pine needles to the plot 6 garlic bed

On Sunday Jan 4,
Stephanie covered plots 1 and 4 mustard and plot 6 tender mustard with frostcovers, sent out email update and updated the blog

On Tuesday Jan 6,
Twila, MAMG scholarship recipient Hayden, and Stephanie added pine needles to all exposed beds/growing plants, put down available black plastic in plots 3 and 6 and the large cinderblock bed in plot 2.
On Wednesday Jan 7, Arlene, Twila, MAMG scholarship recipient Hayden, and Stephanie harvested 145 lbs of cabbage, mustard, and turnips in bitter 20 degree windchill.

On Thursday Jan 8, Stephanie delivered 35 lbs to the Collierville Food Pantry and 110 lbs to the Salvation Army.

On Saturday Jan 10, Carl picked up and delivered 5 baskets full of free compost from the Town of Collierville and sampled plot soil for testing.

On Wednesday Jan 14,
Carl received the soil sample test results for Plot "1", Plot "2", Plot "3", Plot "5" and the "T"own compost and bought 50 lbs of sulphur and delivered it to the garden to start addressing the higher than optimum soil pH.

On Saturday Jan 17, Stephanie uncovered the beet raised beds for the upcoming warm week head. And sometime this week, Sophia delivered more coffee grounds!
