CVG 2015 April 16 - April 20 Progress and Upcoming Opportunities

Upcoming CVG Organized Work Opportunities:
Tuesday April 21: 9:00 am - 11 am
            and 4 pm - dusk -- Continue moving compost into the new plot 3 raised beds. Add compost into the two wooden boxes in plot 2. Top plot 3 boxes with the available "finer"/grated compost.  Continue weeding, especially walkway and "volunteer" grass in garlic beds. Fill some 5 gallon buckets with compost and place near potato beds. Pull a few sickly cabbages. Continue laying landscape fabric in back walkway. If dry enough, maybe start hilling up rows in plot 1 for corn and laying landscape fabric in walkways between rows. Transplant volunteer sunflowers out of plot 2 large cinderblock bed into southern raised bed in plot 1.

Thursday April 22: 8:30 am - 10 am -- If weather cooperates, continue Tuesday work plan, maybe harvest a little for the Collierville Food Pantry

Upcoming Teaching Opportunities:

Wednesday April 22: 9:00 am - 1 pm
-- Host 2015 MAMG Interns for a visit to CVG and a game of "Garden Bingo"!
Sunday May 3 : 11 am - 1 pm -- Thank You event for the Collierville Christian Church. Let me know if you are available to assist.
Monday May 4: 5:30pm - 7:30pm -- Host first group of Girl Scouts of the season, probably play "Garden Bingo", with a possible focus on bluebirds. Let me know if you are available to assist.

Work Progress:


On Thursday April 16
, Lynda, Jan, Teresa, Stephanie. Lynda trimmed back the redbud tree creating a spacious walkway between the back gate and compost area. Jan turned and fertilized the two north zinnia beds. All weeded around the front demo and zinnia beds. Lynda and Stephanie weeded plot 4. Teresa hilled up all potato plants in plot 6. Fertilized the turnip and daikon radish bed with 6-12-12. Filled the back archway planters. Fertilzed the south cinderblock holes and plot 1 with nitrogen.
On Friday April 17, Jan, Twila, Stephanie. Jan and Twila worked in plot 7 and potted up some volunteer marigolds. They worked in the compost area, stacked raised bed wood, discussed replacement of the rotten wood in plot 4, planted rattlesnake pole beans in 4 of the 6 norther archway planters. Set plot 3 raised beds and started to fill them with compost. Weeded in plot 4.
On Saturday April 18, Stephanie co-led the Shelby farms greenline talk on Companion Planting with Jamie of Davies Manor PAR. Teresa and her husband continued filling the plot 3 raised beds with compost.

On Monday April 20, Twila and Stephanie continued moving compost into plot 3 and added nitrogen. Added 6-12-12 to one of the garlic rows in plot 4. Fed birds and discovered the eggs had hatched in the bluebird box!
