Work Progress:
On Monday August 24, Jan Twila Teresa Stephanie. Harvested 11 lbs of tomato, 10 lbs of cowpeas, 22 lb watermelon. Patree delivered 43 lbs total to the Resurrection School in Memphis. Harvested 1 lb of sweet potato but held for curing/drying. De-suckered arkansas traveler tomato plants, pulled 3 beds in plot 3 of purple hull peas, disposed of vines. Started "harvesting" top 4 inches of mulch compost out of central walkway and adding it to newly empty plot 3 beds. Sprayed neem on pole beans, cukes, peppers, traveler tomatoes, melons.
On Tuesday August 25, Jan, Twila, Teresa, Arlene, Stephanie. Arlene harvested, arranged, and delivered zinnia bouquets to Page Robbins. Continued removing compost from walkway to top raised beds. Topped plot 1 okra and removed spent sunflowers. Fought squash bugs on pumpkins. Hand watered new seeds/seedlings. Pulled plot 2 corn stalks.
On Wednesday August 26, Jan, Twila. Cleaned out all pumpkin and cantaloupe vines from plot 8 and tomato vines from remaining hay bale bed. Sprayed fire ant killer on hay bales for safe removal. Pulled a few pepper plants that appeared to have wilt virus/fungus. All plastic pulled from central walkway-dried, folded, and put away in compost area tan container. Worked on removing several layers of wood mulch to level central walkway and cleared a trench under south pole bean arbor for water run-off. Buried back irrigation hose and stared to bury the side gate irrigation hose. Hand watered cucumbers, added greens to compost and turned. Checked and ran garden irrigation for 30 minutes. Irrigation set to run every other day for 30 minutes. Set flower irrigation to run every day for 10 minutes (down 2 minutes).
On Thursday August 27, Twila, Teresa, Stephanie, Don Klotwog. Harvested 5 lbs of green beans, 8 lbs purple hull peas, tomatoes, peppers. Patree delivered harvest plus Monday's held sweet potatoes to the Food Pantry. Teresa and Stephanie harvested another 15 lbs of sweet potatoes, held for next week. Twila worked on compost. All broke down and disposed of last hay bale bed, moving compost into plot 1 raised bed. Cleaned out plot 1 of spent corn stalks and weeds, then covered it with black plastic. Harvested some okra pods for seed saving:
On Friday August 28, Stephanie hand watered seeds/seedlings and archway beans and cukes.
On Saturday August 29, Jan and Twila began digging trench on south side of central walkway for new drain tile.
Beauty in the Garden:
The Collierville Victory Garden and Butterfly Haven is committed to the Memphis Area Master Gardeners' mission to pass on the joy of gardening and UT Extension horticultural knowledge. Through the generosity of the Collierville Christian Church and MAMG, this Plant-A-Row for the Hungry (PAR) garden donates its vegetables to the Collierville Food Pantry, Resurrection Catholic School and Fayette County Project Outreach and its flowers to Page Robbins and Habitat for Humanity.
