CVG Harvest and Progress September 13 - September 18, 2015

Upcoming Teaching Opportunity:

This Thursday afternoon Sept 24, 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm— Crosswind Elementary Roots and Shoots garden club. Students will arrive around 4:30 but please arrive at 4 to organize ourselves. Please let me know if you are able to attend.

This week's Harvest Donation:

87 lbs of tomatoes, cowpeas, green beans, okra, hot and sweet peppers, sweet potato, watermelon, mustard greens:

*to Ms. Julia on Harris Cove on September 17, 2015 = 8 lbs
*to the Resurrection Catholic School in Hickory Hill on September 14, 2015 = 33 lbs (thank you Patree!)
*zinnia arrangements to Page Robbins on September 14, 2015 (thank you Arlene!)
*sweet potatoes held to cure for next week's donation = 19 lbs

Total YTD harvest donation = 2,221 lbs

Work Progress:

On Monday September 14,  Teresa, Stephanie, Arlene, Patree. Arlene harvested zinnia and delivered to Page Robbins. Harvested 12 lb tomato, pepper, okra; 7 lb cowpeas; 3 lb mustard greens; 11 lb watermelon. Patree delivered the 33 lb harvest (plus last week’s held tomatoes and half of last week’s sweet potato) to the Resurrection Catholic School. Over-seeded plot 3 curly mustard green box and collard green box. Hand watered new seedlings and archways. Started pulling coat and jacket pea vines.

On Tuesday September 15,  Leah, Twila, StephaniePulled cowpea vines in plot 3 and disposed. Cleaned walkways around those beds. Filled plot 3 tomato bed with dirt from plot 4 and compost. Covered all empty beds with black plastic. Put egg shells around cabbages. Sprayed half-strength neem oil on cabbages, cukes, mustard greens. Planted chioggia beets in plot 5 swiss chard bed.

On Wednesday September 16,  Stephanie. Hand water archway boxes and new seeds/seedlings, worked on ID tags for new plants.

On Thursday September 17,  Twila, Teresa, Stephanie, Patree. Sophia brought more coffee grounds—thank you!. Harvested 11 lb tomato, peppers, okra; 8 lb purple hull peas; 7 lb mustard greens; 1 lb green beans. Patree delivered 27 lb harvest (plus 10 lbs of last week’s sweet potatoes) to the Collierville Food Pantry. Harvested another 19 lb sweet potatoes out of plot 5, held for next week. Harvested another 8 lbs of tomatoes, purple hulls, okra. Stephanie delivered to Ms. Julia. Cleaned up Ark. Travelers tomato vines. Cleaned out all purple hull pea beds. Planted white lady turnips in plot 3 after turning the bed. Gave a pound of basil to Sophia. 


On Friday September 18,  Stephanie. Watered archways and seedling/seeds. Sprayed BT on cabbages and travelers. Sprinkled dust on travelers and cukes. Sprayed neem on pole beans and mustard. Put mealworms out in one of the feeders because noticed bluebirds had returned to the box.
