CVG Harvest Donation and Work Progress

Can you help?
  • A self directed group, family, or community club to cut flowers and arrange at the garden on Mondays or Tuesdays with delivery on same day. (CVG volunteers are willing to help educate about cutting and arranging the flowers the first 2 weeks). Flowers to be delivered to Page Robbins or preferred nursing home from June to the end of September.  CVG will furnish pint glass jars and tags for the flowers. The group will arrange to pick up for the empty pint jars prior to delivery day. 
  • Carpenter/handy person(s).  Reinforce fencing and construct legs for garden workbench/table. Work needs done in March, days and times negotiable.  Project #2- rehab raised beds. Work to begin in September and October with days and times negotiable.
  • Harvest delivery person(s). Deliver Harvest on Thursday mornings to Collierville Food Pantry only, 1
    67 Washington St, 
    Collierville, TN 38017.
     Pick up harvest from CVG at 8:45 am starting March 17 until December 15.  Will need a covered truck bed or SUV type of 
    vehicle.

Work Progress:

On Wednesday February 24, Twila, Jan, Teresa, Stephanie. Divided little gem and red romaine seedlings into individual cells. Discussed upcoming group work plans at garden. Covered cabbage and lettuce at garden with pine needles for frost protection.

On Thursday February 25, Jan, Twila, Teresa, Leah, Evelyn, Stephanie, Mary. Harvested 3 lbs of collard greens and delivered to the food pantry. Weeded plot 6. Weeded plot 3. Adjusted level in plot 5 near center walkway with clay soil to aid in water runoff. Leveled area around front water spigot. Started laying heavy duty weed barrier fabric in plot 6. Susan delivered onions (THANK YOU!). Fed birds.
On Friday February 26, Teresa, Jan, Twila, Leah, Carol, Mary, Stephanie. Completed installation of weed barrier in plot 6. Pulled weeds in plots 5 and 2. Cleaned out plot 1 raised bed. Moved volunteer garlics. Moved remaining red cabbage to plot 6. Talked weekend planting plan. Dr. Chris visited the garden. Judy brought couple from Arkansas to tour the garden. Completed installation of heavy duty weed barrier down center walkway. Added landscape pins to walkway intersections in plot 6.

On Saturday February 27, Twila, Jan, Teresa, Val, Arlene, Carol, Jane, Stephanie, Adam, Sophia. Hosted 20+ middle school and high school students to prep raised beds then plant 5,000+ root vegetables: potatoes, onions, carrots, turnips, beets, radishes. Transplanted volunteer strawberry plants. Moved a lot of pro-mix and compost as well as collected a pile of pine needles and weeded demo beds. Two interns started weeding plot 7. Trailer full of seasoned pony manure delivered to the garden.

Saturday, February 27: 10:30 am - 12:30 pm - at the garden - Schilling Farms Junior High Junior Beta Club Students will be working and planting.

Work Progress:

On Wednesday February 17,  Twila, Jan, Teresa, Leah, Mary, Rachel, Jane, and Stephanie. Started seeds of 5 lettuces (2 types of Bibb, 3 types romaine: red, green, little gem, as well as "renegade" spinach. Discussed an early may (1st weekend) church thank you event. Discussed a Saturday Feb 27 workday and inviting the Junior Beta students. Discussed spring planting plan, including potato varieties. Discussed new wash station, watering cans, and harvest buckets.

On Thursday February 18,  Jan, Twila, Teresa, Val, Arlene, Stephanie, Leah, and Evelyn. Raked up leaves around fence line, laid weed barrier on south archway walkway, set arches and boxes in place, cut potatoes into wedges with three eyes to allow them to dry, measured out plot 4 for 6 potato double rows, topped plot 5 large raised bed with old archway box soil. 


On Friday February 19, Jan Twila, Evelyn, Susannah, Teresa, Stephanie, and Mary. Added weed barrier lining to the set archway boxes and filled them with dirt from one of the plot 6 raised beds. Planted compact “Peas-in-a-Pot” early spring peas in north side archway boxes, plot 5 large cinderblock bed, and plot 3 raised beds closest to central walkway. Planted red romaine in the south archway boxes between plots 5 and 6. Planted red and savoy cabbage in garden according to plant plan. Planted georgia collards in plot 4. Planted curly kale and red mustard in two of the zinnia beds. Planted curly mustard around cabbages in plot 4. Tilled (planned) potato rows in plot 4. Planted toy choi seeds in plot 5 center cinderblock bed holes.

Work Progress:

On Wednesday February 10,  Twila, Jan, Teresa, Leah, and Stephanie. Continued inventory of plots 7 and 8 and demonstration beds. Lined archway boxes with landscape fabric. Moved garlic out of two plot 6 boxes to make way for future tomato trial plants that needed “fresh" soil. Moved clay soil into bottom bottom of archway boxes, topped with some plot 6 soil. Harvested 11 lbs of mustard greens, collard greens, and sweet potatoes. Started leveling south archway area. Counted 122 cinder block holes in the large plot 5 cinder block bed to be planted shortly with carrots.


On Thursday February 11, Jan, Twila, Teresa, Stephanie. Delivered 11 lbs to the Collierville Food Pantry. Worked on leveling south side archway area. Topped plot 5 cinder block holes with clay and soil. Removed mint from plot 5 cinderblock holes. 

On Friday February 12, Jan, Twila, Teresa, Arlene, Stephanie. Continued center walkway and south archway leveling. Transplanted strawberry plants into plot 2 cinder block holes. Finished topping cinderblock holes in plot 5. Added clay soil to plot 2 large cinderblock bed. 10 cubic yards of Pro-Mix delivered to the garden. Fed birds.





On Monday February 15, Stephanie and son CJ. Made additional TP seed packets of “purple dragon” carrot seeds, “little finger” carrot seeds, and “alpine” daikon radish seeds.
