CVG Harvest and Work Progress March 7 - 13, 2016

This week's CVG Organized Work Opportunities

Monday — cancelled

Tuesday — 2 pm - 4 pm - at the garden

Thursday— 7:30 am - 11 am - at the garden

Friday and Saturday— go to the Memphis Area Master Gardener Spring Fling Plant Sale and Garden Show at the Agricenter (9 am - 5 pm)! Jan, Twila, and Arlene will be demonstrating perennial division on Friday at 12:15 pm and Saturday at 2:15 pm.

Can you help?
  • A self directed group, family, or community club to cut flowers and arrange at the garden on Mondays or Tuesdays with delivery on same day. (CVG volunteers are willing to help educate about cutting and arranging the flowers the first 2 weeks). Flowers to be delivered to Page Robbins or preferred nursing home from June to the end of September.  CVG will furnish pint glass jars and tags for the flowers. The group will arrange to pick up for the empty pint jars prior to delivery day. 
  • Carpenter/handy person(s).  Reinforce fencing and construct legs for garden workbench/table. Work needs done in March, days and times negotiable.  Project #2- rehab raised beds. Work to begin in September and October with days and times negotiable.

Wednesday April 13 - 9 am - noon - 2016 MAMG (Memphis Area Master Gardeners) Interns visit the garden
Please let me know ASAP if you are available to help with this event. We’ll need as many CVG volunteers as possible and want to meet a few times prior to the event to make sure we’re all set with the garden teaching stations.

Monday April 18 - 6 pm - 7 pm Girl Scout Troop visits the garden

Saturday June 4 - CVG is on the MAMG “Through our Garden Gates/ TOGG” Garden Tour

Work Progress:

On Monday March 7Jan, Twila, Val, Teresa, Stephanie Mary. Topped plots 2 and 5 raised beds with promix. Added promix and compost to plot 1 rows. Installed weed barrier fabric to back walkway.



On Tuesday March 8Jan, Twila, Teresa, Jack, Stephanie and Carol. Installed weed barrier fabric in plot 1 between rows. Topped one of the raised beds in plot 1 with promix and pony manure compost. Finished pinning weed barrier fabric in main walkways. Planted perfection drumhead savoy and red acre cabbage in plot 1. Planted red romaine lettuce in plot 5. Side dressed older cabbage with pony manure compost. Stared cleaning perennial pots for Spring Fling. Removed pine needles from zinnia beds.

On Thursday March 10, Stephanie harvested 17 lbs of collard greens and delivered them to the Collierville Food Pantry. Jan, Twila, Teresa, Stephanie, Val worked on Spring Fling plant labels. 

On Friday March 11
Jan and Twila continued to care for lettuce, cucumber, tomato, and remaining cabbage seedlings.
