Work Progress:
On Monday March 28, Teresa and Jan placed dirt and tomato cages in plot #2. Judy and Jane came for the teacher meeting from 5 to 6 pm. Teresa and I brought them up to speed on the garden. Janet stayed and help us finish up the tomato cages.
On Tuesday March 29, Twila, Leah and Jan practiced putting the shade canopy up. Tough! We'll be faster with four and practice. Twila watered the perennials divided on Friday. We finished planting and watering the lettuce in plot #2 and the 1' x 4' arbor beds. Jan treated the church's crape myrtles, checked the berm - all the monkey grass (liriope) is coming back and trimmed the front arbor clematis. Connie stopped by with an interest in cutting Zinnias on Monday evenings. Applied Fire Ant killer to storage benches. Refilled clean Osmocote containers. Water for irrigation is on.
On Thursday March 31, Stephanie harvested 5 lbs of red mustard greens and collard greens until it started raining then delivered the harvest to the Collierville Food Pantry and delivered chairs to the garden.
On Saturday April 2, Twila and Jan divided, repotted, fertilized, treated labeled, and watered several perennials. Plot #7 is finished except for the north rows of pink dwarf mexican petunias. Stephanie represented the garden on the WKNO show “The Family Plot- Gardening in the Mid-South” to talk about growing cabbage.
Beauty in the Garden:
Red Mustard Greens ready for first harvest:
Mustard greens really does make a pretty ground-cover/crop cover!— but it’s ready for thinning out.
